Local Harvest's aim is to help you to source and locate these wonderful regional products while helping to create awareness and community support for our dedicated food and beverage industries.

Slow Food Sunshine Coast Hinterland     

Slow Food Sunshince Coast Hinterland is the local convivium of Slow Food. From convivial small-table events and taste workshops to international forums, Slow Food builds community networks between grower and eater, agriculture and market, village and the world, and at its heart celebrates and champions ’small, slow food’ in ways that enhance knowledge, respect and passion.  Our Sunshine Coast branch is very active in promoting local and sustainable food networks, real food tastings and nutrition education and events.

Permaculture Noosa  &  Permaculture Sunshine Coast

Permaculture is all about sustainable, natural systems of growing food and managing environmental resources. It is a design system based on ethics and principles which can be used to establish, design, manage and improve all efforts made by individuals, households and communities towards a sustainable future. A number of permaculture groups on the Sunshine Coast have formed to encourage and promote Permaculture within Sunshine Coast.

Permaculture Noosa meetings are held every third Thursday of the month at the Cooroy Memorial Hall  at 7pm and include guest speakers, food market, seed banks and great networking.

Michael Pollan - "In Defence of Food" & "Omnivore's Dilemma"

The Omnivore's Dilemma also comes in a young reader's edition which is aimed at teenagers. This is a great way to get kids educated about the hidden truths about what they are eating and motivated to make healthy changes.

Schools

Edible School Gardens

Leonie Shanahan runs the Edible School Garden's Program on the Sunshine Coast. Includes school permaculture programs, teacher training and children's workshops for local schools.  Students learn the life skill of growing organic food and the various systems within this process. The Edible school gardens program is a kid driven program that is now in 12 schools on the Sunshine Coast.

 

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program

The aim of the Kitchen Garden Program is pleasurable food education for young children. The underlying belief is that by introducing this holistic approach we have a chance to positively influence children’s food choices in ways that have not been tried before. The creation and care of a Kitchen Garden teaches children about the natural world, about its beauty and how to care for it, how best to use the resources we have, and an appreciation for how easy it is to bring joy and wellbeing into one’s life through growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing fresh, seasonal produce. There are currently 139 participating Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program schools, located around Australia.
